Talented, idiosyncratic and
knowledgeable, expert and diverse
– we are proud of our people.
Here is one of their stories:

“From A to B in 16 years.

I joined The Brand Union after 16 years of creative roles at advertising agencies in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Shanghai.  At the mid-point in my career I wanted the opportunity to be much more strategic – to create, design and build original brands and ideas versus simple advertising.

“An ad agency creative is meant to be a generalist – someone who can tell a compelling story across a range of different media.  But really it’s mainly about the ad, the TV copy, the campaign, “the work”.  The value is always short-term and ephemeral.  How many great ads do we remember from brands or products that no longer exist? Great advertising can never save a poorly defined, lacklustre brand.

“My role at The Brand Union gives me an opportunity to be much more “creative”  That is, as a brand designer, I’m fundamentally involved in creating the very essence of the brand, product and essential consumer experience.  I’m not constrained to a 30 second script or a single page – rather I’m inventing an idea and experience based on genuine consumer insight and business intelligence.

“I’m also lucky enough to live in a place – China – where I get to see the world change every day.  New buildings, new technologies, new cities – all happening at an incredible pace.  I guess in my own small way I’d like to help our clients here create and sustain the kind of brands that capture the spirit of this place.”

Gary Bryant

General Manager
Johannesburg

I currently head up the operations side of the Johannesburg office in South Africa.

My previous role was heading up the strategy division and I retain some client responsibilities in this practice area. My previous experience is strongly weighted towards the financial services sector having completed work across both retail and investment banking operations in SA, Kenya, Nigeria and Egypt. I have worked across most industries across the African continent and maintain a special interest in Brand Architecture. It’s a crucial area often overlooking and not clearly understood by clients.

My previous employment experience came from the client-side, with Unilever in their ice-cream category, working across category management, key accounts and brand management. I hold a Bachelor of Business Science in Marketing and Economics and an MBA and remain a lifelong student of life.

Outside of working hours you’re likely to find me drinking wine, cooking (normally with wine), cursing on a golf course, out running a marathon, writing, enjoying the splendour of TMBCW (The Most Beautiful Country in the World = South Africa) or trying to see as many of the other (not quite as beautiful as SA) countries in the world (often in search of wine)!

I am the only female designer in the Singapore office, well taken care of by four other designers in the creative team. Although I’m less than a year old in branding, I’m constantly learning and enjoying my work.

I love illustrating and go pretty crazy over well-designed books and notebooks. I’m proud to say I’m an author-cum-illustrator of a published book named Choi! Touchwood. I’m thankful that TBU has been supportive of me all this while. Cheers!

Toby Southgate

Managing Director
London

I’m lucky enough to have seen most corners of the globe since I joined The Brand Union at the end of 2007. Working with clients and colleagues across the network is a vital component of our culture, and one of the real joys of being a part of The Brand Union.

I originally joined the business to open our office in Abu Dhabi, working closely with Hermann and the Middle East team. I spent 2010 with Rob and Richard in New York, helping to manage the integration of Ogilvy’s BIG and Brouillard, JWT’s corporate advertising business, into The Brand Union. And in January 2011 I returned to London to lead our UK business.

No two days here are the same. You might work with a beverages brand one day, a financial services institution the next, and a global telco in between. Truthfully, there’s never a dull moment. Bring it on.

Mark Lloyd

Creative Director
London

I was born and raised in a south Wales valley and come from several generations of a coal-mining family. From an early age I enjoyed drawing and painting, and my love of art led me to pop art and Andy Warhol who inspired me with his take on popular culture and the role that every-day consumer brands have in peoples’ lives.

After four years of studying graphic design I was lucky enough to work for the leading design agency of the time, Michael Peters and Partners. Working there reinforced a love of branded packaging design and like Andy I did get to work on an iconic Campbell’s brand, V8 Juice.

Subsequently, I have worked at a number of top London design agencies and even created one myself. It’s great to have turned a pastime into a career and to have been involved in persuading consumer choice around the globe, with the leading brands I have helped create, reposition and refresh.

Hayley Kane

Designer
London

Hi, I’m Hayley and I began my time at The Brand Union after a successful stint on the student bursary scheme. Plucked fresh from my degree at University College Falmouth in 2008, I quickly moved up the ranks from junior to mid-weight designer in just over a year.

My time here so far has seen me play a key role in the JTI team, having worked on both the Glamour and Sobranie brands. My time on this account has given me a truly diverse breath of experience, with work ranging from packaging and identity design through to events and above-the-line campaigns. In 2009, I was lucky enough to travel to New York and co-ordinate an event for the Glamour brand. This involved escorting eight excitable eastern European girls around the Big Apple for a ‘shopping trip of a lifetime’.

Outside of the studio, I have a fascination for baking and an obsession with Liverpool FC.

Graham Hitchmough

Regional Director
ASEAN

My career to date has taken me from London to Singapore, via Thailand. Every step of the way – including Ogilvy & Mather London, WCRS, Coley Porter Bell and Blue Marlin – has been the result of a little bit of planning and a lot of luck, and has resulted in the opportunity to be involved with countless great people, great work and great brands.

Now happily in Singapore, I am still surrounded [made to look good] by great people and am enjoying having a front row seat as Asian brands take on the world.

Céline Dérosier

Managing Director Consumer Branding
Paris

I completed my education at CELSA. I worked for four years with a market research company, specialising in product innovation, where clients included Unilever, Kraft, AGF, Henkel and France 2. I then worked for eight years at Added Value Paris (marketing consultancy).

After qualitative research I became Director and worked on numerous French and international projects, particularly on brand positioning assessments and brand building projects (Intercontinental, Accor, Boots, Scrabble), on strategic brand extensions and international innovation projects (Levi’s, Campbell, Bel, BPI Perfumes, Pommery), and customer service (Air France). I joined The Brand Union Paris in 2004.

I am now Managing Director Consumer Branding, leading the project management team, reinforcing strategic marketing and dedicated to innovation development. For six years I have led the international innovation development of Bel (Middle East, Japan, China). I also work a lot for Henkel, Heineken (Desperados, Pelforth), Pernod and Mars Ice Cream.

Two things that I love are: travelling and enjoying life, in all dimensions.

Verena Lettau

Client Director
Hamburg

As a Client Director at The Brand Union Hamburg, I’m responsible for our major client Mars including food and pet brands. From our Hamburg office we are responsible for the design of the European packs. We work hand-in-hand with the client regarding all strategic and brand management issues. It’s more than a client-agency alliance. It’s a fabulous partnership based on a mutual trust which has been built up over many years.

Before I joined the Hamburg office in the beginning of 2011 I worked for international agencies such as TBWA , DDB, Grey and Scholz & Friends. Through my experience in classic advertisement and design I understand the importance of combining the different tools such as brand building and creating integrated 360° concepts. To get more inspiration for my work I do several sports and having played handball for over 15 years I’ve developed quite an assertiveness.

I like to look upon my work from an angle of a sportswoman – this is why I take every project as a unique tournament pushing myself for excellent performance. I challenge myself and my team to win these competitions in order to achieve the best possible results in the market for our clients.

Sarah Scott

Client Manager
Cape Town

Hi! My name is Sarah and I am a client manager with over three years’ experience in strategic brand management and client relations. Prior to working in an agency, I was on the client side as a part of the Nedbank brand team and worked across the national positioning and brand promotion for the bank.

I graduated my B.Comm Marketing Honour’s (Cum Laude) from the University of Johannesburg, and was very fortunate in that I was selected during the third year of my studies to participate in a six month international scholarship in Sweden. I made many friends from all over the globe in the little town of Jönköping, and was able to experience international marketing trends and culture.

When not at work you can usually find me in a shoe shop or dining out with friends and family. I also enjoy dancing, reading and photography.

Simon Parkinson

Design Director
Dubai

I have been with The Brand Union since 2008, working on creating branding solutions for an inspiring range of regional clients including Sorouh, ADPC, Mauzan, ALJ, NSCSA and Khalifa Ports Industrial Zone.

I graduated from Central Saint Martins and worked in the music, fashion and arts industries, with clients including MTV, Virgin Records, Sony, Nike, Adidas, Levi’s, CAT, Deutsche Bank and Orange. Highlights include working with Coldplay, The Chemical Brothers and the photographer Nick Waplington.

My current passion is stand-up paddle boarding and I enjoy getting out on to the open ocean as often as possible. I am married with two children and we love exploring the region, embracing new countries, cultures and cuisines. We have just returned from a trip through Vietnam and Cambodia where a personal highlight was eating deep fried tarantulas. Other interests include typography, snowboarding, tennis and scrabble and I am inspired by independent film, music, photography, fashion and design.

Elke Pietzch

Consultant Director
Hamburg

Hello, I am Elke.

Being the Consultant Director at The Brand Union Hamburg, I’m responsible for our key clients such as Henkel or Emmi.

Before I joined the strategic department at the Hamburg office I worked for Kellogg’s and Procter&Gamble. As an international product manager I was in charge of new product development, creating marketing concepts, as well as leading major brands.

As I understand brand building to be the merger of heritage and vision, I took initiative and created the TBU trendmarks tool, observing the markets around the world with a huge trend-team in Hamburg to create one-of-a-kind trend forecasts for our clients.

I have experience that is the combination of young devotion, the spirit of acquainting knowledge and the long time operational background in creating innovative and sustainable projects. That’s why I love to push young talent and encourage them to develop leadership skills.

Martin Cadwallader

Senior Digital Designer
London

A degree in philosophy, an interest in literature, a background in children’s publishing, an album available in HMV and a single played on Radio 1 qualify me as The Brand Union London’s Senior Digital Designer.

Here I mainly like to create motion graphics of various kinds, but I also like to dabble in corporate brand design and really anything else I can get my grubby hands on. My influences are The Ramones, Rabelais and René Descartes.
